2000 - The Bay of Islands Center for Sustainable Living experiment chose 'forestry issues' as one of their primary causes back in 2000. Always opposed to large-scale logging in Nova Scotia, Center volunteers lobbied hard against clearcutting in the Liscombe Game Sanctuary. They also began planting trees on a small scale. 2003 - Hurricane Juan - The devestation to forests in Nova Scotia has been well documented and thus, our seedling business began. We started offering seedlings as a reforestation remedy for decimated properties along the Atlantic coast. They had few customers. Everyone was too busy cleaning up that year to think about replanting! 2004 - The following year, older and wiser, they didn't stock tree seedlings at our retail outlet, the Trail Stop Country Market. Then, they began receiving phone calls and emails for 'green wedding favours'. With no tree seedlings, they had few customers. 2005 - Finally, it all came together. They had hundreds of tiny tree seedlings and lots of customers. The "Living Tree" business was born! 2009 - The Trail Stop delivered over 3000 seedlings to earth friendly weddings, volunteer and customer appreciation events, memorial services, baby showers -- and reforestation projects. In 2010 will double that number. Now, 6000 tree seedlings may not sound like a lot, but each one will be registered with the United Nations Billion Trees Campaign which now numbers over 12 billion trees planted somewhere in the world. Planting a Tree Does Make a Difference!
